I went to Terra Nova to get away from the city for a couple of days, meet some new people and possibly learn a few new tricks of the trade in the process. I originally went up for acting, but after taking a session on spoken word poetry I decided that was where I needed to be. This was something I hadn't done since high school and revisiting it opened up some real truths that I hadn't really looked at much. It forced me to get back in touch with myself and look at where I am and how I need to grow to reach the next place in my life. Terra Nova solidified friendships that I believe will last forever and helped me to begin creating not only art, but the life I have wanted. Before Terra Nova I was busy covering up my flaws and insecurities. I hid behind a wall of lies and mirages because I thought I was safe there. Terra Nova challenged me to really take a good look at who I am, accept the things I have done, and move forward. My past no longer defines me, at least most of the time. I have grown hugely and Terra Nova is where it all started.

CEO & FOUNDER OF THE 24 FOUNDATION

When I first registered for Terra Nova, I thought that I was going to be frolicking in the woods with a bunch of dancers but David Arcos suggested that I join "The Others." Intrigued by the undefined, I decided to check it out. It is by far the best decision I have ever made in my life. Through guided questions, I was able to identify a deep dream in my heart. Terra Nova gave me a safe place to talk about my ideas. I shared about my desire to start a foundation that uses art as a healing tool, allowing people to tell their stories through various creative mediums. Not only did Terra Nova help me identify my dream, but it gave me a voice to carry it out. My life has not been the same since. Three years later, The 24 Foundation has helped over 400 at-risk youth tell their stories through art and is continuing to grow.

I had heard stories about the great opportunities at Terra Nova and I was nervous about letting myself take certain risks in front of so many people. I expected Terra Nova to be life changing. I had heard about the wonderful experiences others have had and the friends they've made. I expected nothing less but I was not fully prepared for the extent of what a life changing experience it really was. It helped me to rid myself of my creative anxiety and connect with like minded individuals to work together as a community to create. I have never been so proud of my friends when seeing them create and hearing the messages I heard. I watched people grow before my very eyes. I will always be a part of Terra Nova as long as I am able. It jump started my involvement within the community of Mosaic to a whole new level and helped to unlock many aspects of my creativity.

I was a bit nervous about Terra Nova because I am Jewish but was happy to find that there were others of different faiths present. My area of focus was Improv. I had never done it before and I absolutely loved it. It gave me a chance to be silly and creative; to work on coming out of my shell. It's also a great exercise in thinking on your toes. I went to Terra Nova hoping to distract myself from the end of a painful relationship—at least for the weekend. One theme I saw repeatedly was the idea of love; that it was all around us if we just remember to look for it. At the campfire, people were welcomed to ask for prayer. I received prayer that night for the first time in many years. This experience reminded me that if I want to feel the love that is all around me, I have to make room in my heart and my life for it. This finally helped me leave some of my hurt behind. I was able to let go of that failed relationship and make room for all the positive things that were all round me to receive.

I approached my most recent Terra Nova experience with caution. I didn't want to set my expectations to high... but this last retreat ushered in a new found joy. I participated in the painting and story telling workshops but my favorite aspects were the people, the conversations and the ingenuity. Every moment felt spontaneous and real. I was able to relax because I was in a safe place with safe people. I had no idea I would leave with a group of like-minded, extraordinary friends. I left Terra Nova filled with the hope of having community, of being accepted and understood and knowing that I was not alone in my 'struggling artist' act. Terra Nova trickled down to life in LA, starting a new joyous well of friendships that led to a solid community at Mosaic. I am so thankful. Community makes life beautiful. Terra Nova gave me real, tangible hope and this hope materialized before my very eyes. Magic.

    • Chris Marsh

      Chris Marsh

      DANCER & ACTOR

I was very hesitant about going to a creative retreat put together by a church. I'm not a church-goer and I'm a little sensitive about people pushing their personal beliefs on me. Not only were my fears put to rest, I was surprised at how cool the people were at Terra Nova. I made permanant friendships there. I was worried when I had to pick two workshops that were not in my creative area. I chose the DJ mixing and improv workshops. It was actually really good for me to be challenged in new ways. I realized I tend to play it safe too much and that I'm capable of so much more.

I went to Terra Nova to be challenged as a dancer and I wasn't disappointed. I had several chances to be creative and I choreographed a routine with a few other great dancers. The final performance was an amazing experience and sharing it with other passionate creatives who appreciated the journey was great.

I'm a beginner photographer. I heard about Terra Nova from a friend and it sounded like a good opportunity to connect to people who knew more than I did. My group was so much fun. There were plenty of other people in my group to learn from but Jess has a great project for us to work on as a group. I was introduced to new features on my camera, new creative options for my photogrphy, and my potential as a photographer.

The campfire was amazing. I felt very moved hearing so many great campfire stories. After the weekend was over I had made new friends and developed stronger skills. I also have been feeling anxious at work lately. I can't shake the feeling that I need to be spending more of my day creating beautiful pictures and less of it tabulating numbers. I can't wait for the next Terra Nova.

    • Philippe Martinez

      Philippe Martinez

      DESIGNER, ACTOR & MUSICIAN

At my first Terra Nova, I was safe and chose Design as my "major" (which is my day job), then I finally listened to that insisting inner voice and shifted to Acting as my area of concentration. It was my first time acting and to say that I was frightened would be an understatement! Three days later, after some much-needed convincing by a dear friend (whom I actually barely knew at the time!), I was performing a scene in front of 250 people. They even applauded! At my second Terra Nova, I went right for the scariest area: Music, which was fantastic under the mentorship of veteran singers, songwriters and producers from Nashville and LA. Terra Nova is refreshing, challenging, energizing. It helps you discover some deeply-buried potential. I always look back at it with utter amazement and gratefulness. God sometimes works in strange ways, and experiences like this helps you get closer, trusting him through self-discovery and community. I believe He gave us certain abilities so that we may use them, whether for our own pleasure or for inspiring others.

  • COMMON QUESTIONS

Q: Is Terra Nova appropriate for my skill level?

Terra Nova is uniquely designed to meet any skill level.

Q: What does the Terra Nova schedule entail?

In addition to your specific creative area program, Terra Nova includes several rallies, Journey Through The Arts, a talent showcase, workshops, and recreation time.

Q: If I can no longer attend Terra Nova, can I get my deposit or registration fee back?

There will be no refunds after July 15th.

Q: I am not an artist or a creative person. Why do people keep telling me I should go to Terra Nova?

A:We believe that everyone is an artist and creativity extends to all aspects of life. Whether you work in front of a canvas or a computer monitor—you are always creating. Terra Nova is not limited to artists in the traditional sense of the word—it's about finding inspiration, tapping into your creative resources and bringing new life into the work that you do everyday. You may even rediscover a dream that you have always wanted to live.

Q: I noticed that Terra Nova is sponsored by a community of faith. Do I have to be a certain faith to go?

No, you do not have to be a certain faith to go. Terra Nova is a creative event developed annually by Mosaic. We believe that creativity is the natural result of spirituality. We welcome everyone regardless of where they are on their spiritual journey.

Q: I'm interested in registering but I'm not sure which creative area to choose.

If you don't already practice a specific art form, choose an area you've always wanted to explore. We're prepared to accommodate all levels of expertise.

Q: Can I change my mind about my creative area later?

You can change/choose your creative area of concentration on the first day after the leaders give their pitches.

Q: Do I need to bring my own equipment and supplies?

You should bring the tools you want to create with. For example, if you choose photography, you should bring your camera. Your creative area leader will contact you if there are any suggested items specific to your craft.

Q: What is Journey through the Arts?

Journey through the Arts are workshops designed for you to explore areas that are unfamiliar...and you'll love it. In previous years workshops have included DJing, graffiti art, stage combat, culinary arts and other areas that have encouraged campers to stretch themselves beyond their main creative areas.

Q: What are appropriate ages for campers?

Terra Nova is appropriate for all adults.

Q: Are children allowed to register for Terra Nova?

A: Teenagers who can be one their own for three days and care for themselves are welcome to register. If your child needs supervision, both you and the child need to register to attend as campers.

Q: Who can I contact about carpooling?

You can find carpool options here: Carpool Drivers page.

Q: Are the meals friendly to vegetarians or someone with allergies?

Yes! You will submit information about your dietary concerns when registering. The camp can accommodate some needs if given sufficient notice.

Q: Can I choose my roommates?

Yes. You will share a bunk with multiple roommates. You can list one person as a preferred roommate when registering.

Q: Do I have to participate in everything?

Although we are planning for you to attend all of the events, we trust your judgment if you decide to excuse yourself from any particular part of the schedule.

Q: Who are the people who lead the workshops?

A: Terra Nova creative area leaders are Volunteer Staff at Mosaic. Leaders have varying levels of expertise. Some work professionally in their area and others are hobbyists. They all work collaboratively with our planning team to develop creative programs that will challenge multiple skill levels.

Q: Is there a Kid's Terra Nova? When is it? How much does it cost?

A: We are creating a Kid's (7yrs-11yrs) Program for Terra Nova this year so kids who accompany their parents to Terra Nova will have something to do (and so the parents can be free to fully participate in their own Terra Nova activities). Children who are older than 11 years old can participate in the other creative areas with the adults. Parents must register their children separately on the Terra Nova website when they register themselves. All children under 18 must register and attend with a registered adult. The current registration rates apply to each adult and child that signs up. We will post updates to the Terra Nova website once they becomes available.

  • PACKING LIST

You will receive more details by email after you register but we do realize that knowing what you'll need to bring may give you a better idea about what to expect. Here are few notes to help you out.

    PERSONAL ITEMS

You will need to bring your own bed linens (pillow and either a sleeping bag or blankets). You will need casual clothing for three days, your own bath towel, and your own toiletries. We recommend that you pack athletic shoes, a sweatshirt, and extra clothing if your craft is messy. There is also a swimming pool so bring a bathing suit if you intend to swim. For more details on recreation and accommodations, see the Thousand Pines website.

  • DIRECTIONS & DETAILS

Check-in time is 8:00 a.m. in front of the Thousand Pines dining hall. It will take you approximately 1-2 hours from Los Angeles locations. We strongly recommend that you print these maps, determine your route and determine your departure time in advance. It is possible that you will lose cell phone and GPS reception en route to the camp. We encourage you to carpool and make friends.

My favorite Terra Nova memory is Hank's debut spoken word piece. I never knew that he had that talent. It was such a beautiful and powerful piece and so inspiring to see the strength in vulnerability that he was able to show. It was such a testimony to diving into passions that you have held for a long time but not yet explored.

The thing I love about Terra Nova is that there are few things in the world like it. It's a friend ship, a vehicle you board that takes you somewhere together that you could never have charted on your own. The places we arrive together ARE always surprising and at times EVEN breath-taking.
